Outdoor post-processing for long-life QR signage

Extend the lifespan of QR signage deployed outdoors with coatings, sealants, and mounting strategies designed for harsh environments.

Weatherproofing essentials

ASA and PETG prints respond best to UV-resistant coatings. Avoid PLA outdoors unless fully sealed and shielded from direct sunlight. For hardware, choose stainless steel or brass fasteners to eliminate corrosion around QR signage installations.

Finishing checklist

  1. Surface preparation

Wet sand with 400 and 800 grit paper, clean with isopropyl alcohol, and mask QR modules with painter's tape.

  2. Primer and paint

Apply two coats of automotive primer, then spray contrasting enamel for the QR voxels. Allow 24 hours cure time between coats.

  3. Protective sealing

Finish with UV-resistant polyurethane or marine-grade epoxy to seal against rain, sun, and chemical exposure.

  4. Mounting

Use stainless steel hardware or VHB tape, ensuring a flush base and gasket to prevent water ingress.

Maintenance schedule

Inspect signage quarterly for UV fading, abrasion, or adhesive failure. Clean with mild detergent and soft cloth only. Re-apply clear coat annually in high-UV regions to maintain contrast and scan reliability.
